Irete-Okanran

Irete was cast for Orunmila, Okanran
was cast for Orunmila, on the day
that all Ifa priests gathered in the house
of Olofin, preparing poison to kill Orunmila
the very moment he would arrive too.
Orunmila was told to fast all day in order
to prevent him from ingesting poison, and
to offer 3200 cowries and some palm oil.
Orunnila listened and made the offering.
On that day the babalawo's wgo were gathered
in Olofin's house invited Orunmila to join them
at the feast. After conspiring with Olofin
they poisoned the wine, also putting
the deadly poison ataragba on the clothing
and on the mat that Orunmila would use.
When Orunmila arrived in Olofin's house,
the put the wine in front of him, and he watched it
intently. "What pot is boiling there in front of me?
It is poison that's cooking in the pot. Irete-Okanran,
the awo will not drink today.
Irete-Okanran, the Awo will not drink.
Later on they brought him palm wine, but
Orunmila just looked at it and said the same.
Subsequently Olofin placed his Ifa on the floor
to be consulted for his elder son, who was sick in bed.
All awo's present said that the boy would not die, but when
Olofin asked Orunmila, he said the child would die, unless
Olofin would would give his royal clothing and the mat
that usually covered his throne, to make medicine for the child.
Olofin thought that this was his chance
to have Orunmila killed, because of the poison
ataragba that was put on the clothing and the mat
that would be handed to Orunmila.
But when the paraphernalia were brought in,
a bird began to sing out and sang:
"Orunmila. don't sit on the mat today!
Don't sit on the clothing today! Go sit on ifin,
you should sit down on ifin!"
When the stuff and the mat were brought in,
Orunmila asked them to wear the clothing
and to sit on the mat. They did,
and were poisoned that way. Orunmila
left the house healthy and alive.
